With a scheduled start date of late 2010 or early 2011, the DECOBIKE program will offer approximately 1,000 bikes at 100 stations throughout the city of Miami Beach. The Miami.com website suggests that the program will expand within the next year to accommodate 600 new bikes and three dozen more stations.
Although many may see this as something for just tourists, it is intended to supplement the current public transportation. The City of Miami is encouraging ‘green’ commuting especially for short trips within the city that might typically be made by car.
Ready to go get DECO and put the pedal to the rubber? Here’s how the program works:
Costs associated with the program are minimal compared to the costs of bike ownership and maintenance. Residents who anticipate heavy monthly usage can buy a BeachPass for $15 a month for unlimited use. Hourly rentals are based on half-hour pricing for $4 or hourly for $5. Staying for a few days? Check out the 1-day and 5-day rides for $14 and $49 respectively.
