Based on the old Mazda 323 of the 80’s, the Mazda 2 is a compact hatchback that is thoroughly modernized. The rounded fenders are reminiscent of the CX-7, while the distinct Mazda grille adorns the front. Though shorter and not as long as the Honda Fit, the Mazda 2 makes no sacrifices with interior space and delivers the same cabin room. It’s light weight permits gains in economy, allowing its 1.5 liter, 4-cylinder engine generate an impressive 102hp, more than enough to make this light-footed vehicle accelerate well. As for the drive, it is nimble and sporty, like all Mazdas. Its stability on unfinished roads is remarkably smooth, making broken pavement and potholes a non-issue for the comfort of those traveling in it. There are no repercussions or see-sawing body motion – just nimble suspension tuning and handling masterfully managing whatever the road sends at them.
All is looking good for the Mazda 2 in the US. It is a great little versatile car that should prove a worthy competitor to those that have already established a foothold in the class, namely Honda, Toyota and Nissan.
