Mazda Skyactive
Miami, get ready for a revolution in green automotive technology. Driving fun meets engineering function in the all-new Mazda Skyactive 3 and all-new Mazda Skyactive CX-5.
SkyActiv has been mentioned before in our newsletter, but new developments in the concept in the Mazda Design Department, along with an expansion of the technology have earned it another go.
SkyActiv is not the newest Mazda in development, nor is it a new technology. Instead it is a fresh, new approach in automobile design that includes many new technologies and advancements. And recently, Mazda gave us an early look at its progress.
The idea is to cut fuel consumption in modern Mazdas by 30%. That's right, 30%. And across the ENTIRE line of Mazda vehicles by the year 2015. The first step for Mazda was to readdress every step of the engineering process, and question even the smallest accepted conventional wisdoms when it comes to designing a fuel-efficient car. In summary, Mazda has gone back to the drawing board to recreate their line with new diesel engines with super-low compression ratios, smaller and lighter transmissions, lighter vehicle bodies and the use of auto-stop and regenerative braking technologies. All of these are part of the holistic concept called the Mazda SkyActiv Project.
Perhaps the star of the show is the 2.0 Liter SkyActiv gasoline engine that will replace the current 2.0 Liter Mazda engine. It has a lower compression ratio than any other engine (high ratio engines extract more energy from an air-fuel mixture, but are generally less efficient at it), but the unique design of the SkyActiv engine has a second stage which provides a more "complete burn", which translates to more fuel efficiency, same performance. A multi-port fuel injector and exhaust manifold with compartmentalized gas runners (similar to race car engines) rounds out the design and further increases performance and fuel efficiency.
Many analysts are predicting that about 13 percent of all passenger cars will be electrically-propelled by 2020 in the Americas, with 23 percent in Europe. Mazda believes that even as the electric powertrains take some of the share, most people will still be eager to buy and drive a fuel-efficient vehicle with a gas engine. We are with them. Though the hum of an electric engine is music to our ears, nothing is sweeter the sound of a turbocharger spooling up.

The 2011 Frankfurt Auto Show is just a few weeks away, and that means we'll be getting the first hands-on preview of Mazda's latest model. The Mazda CX-5, based on Mazda's new design concept, Minagi, will be making its debut with its new design language, fuel-saving tech and cabin technology.
The Mazda CX-5 is a small crossover designed to fit just under the CX-7 in the Mazda line of vehicles. The new look involves an polyhedral grill and rounded hood curving down toward the front fenders. Smooth door panels with contour lines adorn the profile, offering a forward-thinking but still conventional appearance to the sharply handsome newest Mazda.
From interior photos, there is a new electronics and design interface for Mazda. "Infotainment" functions are present on the high-mounted LCD, with traditional dials for volume and tuning. The vehicle should prove to be a big hit this September in Frankfurt, and we can't wait to get our hands on one in our showroom. The release date for the CX-5 has not officially been set, but we are predicting we'll be seeing them for sale in early 2012.
